About Preparation
The JLPT, or Japanese-Language Proficiency Test, is a well-known exam for non-native speakers who want to study, work, or live in Japan. It tests reading and listening skills and has five levels—N5 (beginner) to N1 (advanced).
JLPT is often required for university admissions, jobs, and visas in Japan. Higher levels, especially N2 and N1, show strong Japanese skills and can help with career opportunities. Unlike some other language tests, JLPT does not have speaking or writing sections, focusing only on comprehension.
The test is held twice a year in many countries and is widely accepted as proof of Japanese language ability. Whether for education, work, or personal growth, JLPT is an important step for learning Japanese
The JLPT test is divided into two main sections: Reading and Listening. Each section is scored separately, and the total score determines the proficiency level. The test has five levels—N5 to N1—where higher levels indicate greater fluency.
Unlike other language exams, JLPT does not include Speaking or Writing sections. The test format and difficulty vary depending on the level, with N5 and N4 focusing on basic grammar and vocabulary, while N3, N2, and N1 assess more complex language skills needed for academic and professional use.

At Unity Education, we don’t just prepare you for the test—we prepare you for real-world Japanese proficiency.
The JLPT Listening test follows a similar pattern, evaluating your ability to understand spoken Japanese. The test consists of listening to various conversations or passages, and you will answer questions based on what you hear. Each correct answer earns you a point, and these raw scores are then used to determine your overall score for the listening section.
Accurate understanding and quick decision-making are important, as mistakes can affect your score. The JLPT Reading section also follows a similar approach, assessing your ability to comprehend written text.
Unlike the IELTS, the JLPT does not have an overall band score. Instead, your score from both the Listening and Reading sections determines your proficiency level, which is then matched with the appropriate level (N5 to N1).

JLPT is managed by two main organizations: the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES), offering you the flexibility to choose the test center and schedule that best suits you. Regardless of where you take the test, the exam format and fees will remain consistent.
The test fee varies depending on the level and location, and registration typically closes about a month before the exam date. To register, you will need to submit a recent passport-sized photo and your identification details. Be sure to complete your registration before the deadline to secure your spot.
