What is it?

The Pearson Test of English (PTE) is an English language proficiency test that evaluates speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. It is widely recognized by universities, colleges, and governments. The test is computer-based, including tasks like speaking into a microphone, reading, answering multiple-choice questions, and writing essays. There are two main types: PTE Academic for students aiming to study in English-speaking countries, and PTE General for general proficiency, often used for employment or immigration. PTE results are usually available within a few days.

About Preparation

About Exam

Pearson Language Tests, part of the Pearson PLC Group, provides three versions of its English proficiency test for non-native speakers: PTE Academic, PTE Academic UKVI, and PTE Home.

The PTE Academic is commonly required by universities and colleges worldwide for admission purposes, typically taken by students applying for higher education. The PTE Academic UKVI is a Secure English Language Test (SELT), officially approved by the UK Home Office for visa applications that demand proof of English proficiency across all four language skills. The PTE Home exam, also endorsed by the UK Home Office, is intended for those seeking work or family visas, offering a simpler alternative for immigration purposes.

Score Pattern

The PTE Academic evaluates a student’s skills in speaking, writing, reading, and listening. On average, it takes about 3 hours to complete all sections. The test provides a score ranging from 10 to 90 on the Global Scale of English, offering a precise measurement of your English proficiency.

Test Structure

PTE Academic test format has three components:

– Speaking & Writing
– Reading
– Listening

Score Pattern

The IELTS Listening test follows a Band Score pattern to evaluate performance. Each correct answer out of the 40 questions earns a mark, and these raw scores are converted to the IELTS 9-band scale using a Band Score conversion table. Accurate spelling and grammar are crucial when transferring answers to the answer sheet, as mistakes can lower your score. The final score is calculated by averaging the band scores from all four modules — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — to determine the overall band score.
